Heston Blumenthal's brand new and much-hyped ice creams hit Waitrose last week, in flavours including mustard, salted caramel popcorn and chocolate with rosemary. So are they a strangely beautiful collision of sweet and savoury and a delicious blurring between main course and dessert, or are they a creamy mess?
Mustard: On first taste and on its own, this is weird. Really weird. But teamed with smoked salmon on seeded bread, with watercress salad it made a delicious savoury addition that had a whole grain mustard kick with a creamy kick and just a subtle hint of sweetness.
Salted caramel popcorn: Textured with pieces of popcorn and caramel, this tastes like a trip to the cinema. With only a hint of salt, this still works brilliantly as a desert with a difference – sweet, creamy and crunchy all at once.
Chocolate with rosemary: Still firmly in the realm of desserts, this one is a dark decadent and unmistakably chocolatey. The rosemary gives it a hint of herbiness that works in the same way with the chocolate as mint.
So stock up for your next dinner party – they're not all that bad, and they're definitely a talking point. The ice creams are available now in Waitrose, Fulham.
